Last Friday morning, I received my Pottermore e-mail. I was slightly shrieking whilst checking my e-mail at school; shrieking because I cannot contain my excitement, slightly because I am the only person in the workplace who is acquainted with such things as Pottermore.
I initially checked the insides of Pottermore at work but our work PC is like a machine that runs on charcoal, so I decided to check the site at home.

The welcome e-mail is so pretty, right? I chose OwlNewt4 as my username because it is the shortest among the choices and it is very easy to remember.
The gateway is where you can explore chapters and discover the stories behind Harry Potter characters, places, objects, etc. My favorite, so far, is Professor McGonagall’s.
At Chapter 5, you will be taken to the Diagon Alley. Of course, as you all know, it is where you can buy all Wizarding stuff and your wand. Mine is an Ash and Dragon, 10 3/4, Unyielding.
You get the money you spend on Diagon Alley from Gringotts. You get an initial amount of 500 Galleons, which you will get to spend while exploring Pottermore.
At Chapter 7, you will get sorted. You will be asked a series of questions (which I think is a personality test) then, The Sorting Hat will place you on your house. I got sorted to Gryffindor (although I secretly wished to be in Slytherin).
In the rest of the chapters, you will find more stories about your favorite Harry Potter characters. Also, you will get to collect items which you can put in your trunk. Some items that you collect will award you house points, some are useful in Potion making.
Ah. Speaking of Potions. Potions are fun but are VERY difficult to make. To sum up my sentiments on this, let me share with you a tweet from NimbusWatch123 which goes, “Wait 100 minutes for a Potion to brew. Screw it up anyway. T_T”
Which brings us to my favorite part of Pottermore (so far), that is, Spells! I have been practising and my highest spell cast potency is around 120+, I just hope the Wizarding Duel will be available already so that I can test whether I am actually doing well in spell-casting.
There are still a lot of things to improve on Pottermore, but the site is still in Beta and as Potterheads who are given early access, I think it is our duty to give comments (not rants) on how to improve the site. Here are my two cents:
- Put a background music (which you can turn on/off)
- Make shopping in Diagon Alley easier! Allow us to check more items and place them in a cart, just like in online shopping sites. And lastly,
- Make Potions easier. Because really, it IS difficult. Plus, award more points for each potion brewed.
That’s it! I am enjoying Pottermore a lot, I am starting to forget Sims Social. HRHRHRHR. Happy long weekend! :)
PS. Don’t forget to add me, OwlNewt4! See you on the site! :)
